Golfers Dress Sense Raises Eyebrows

Many people find the dress code surrounding golf strange but all sports have them. This means that it is very important to ensure that you are selecting the best possible apparel when you are trying to decide what to wear. Of course every golf course has its own set of dress guidelines, but knowing what are the standard guidelines can help you have a pleasurable experience. This is an important aspect of golf and cannot be dismissed with many clubs refusing to allow people to play if they are incorrectly dressed. This is not only embarrassing but can be an awkward problem if you are barred from playing simply because there was some miscommunication regarding clothes to be worn.

For men and boys there are several things that are immediately unacceptable on the golf course. The first is the use of shirts with no collar and the next is the use of shirts with no sleeves - neither of these are considered appropriate at any time. The likes of running shoes (usually they have metal spikes) and jogging wear are also not allowed. You should take care to avoid wearing clothing with obnoxious logos or anything offensive on them as well. Additionally wearing jeans or sandals are not allowed, even for women.

The most proper mens attire on the golf course happens to be collared shirts, the right pair of pants or shorts and golf or athletic shoes. If you are wearing golf shoes, ensure that they are soft spikes and are not metal spikes - most courses will not permit metal spikes on the green due to the damage that they can cause. Shirts can be either long sleeve or short sleeve and can also include having a turtleneck or pull over sweater. Socks should reach ankle length without any distasteful logos and in solid color.

For women playing golf, fitting shirts and skirts and even Capris are allowed. Generally, women are barred from wearing pants of any type including jeans shorts. For modestys sake a woman wearing shorts or a skirt should ensure they are of an appropriate length which means not higher than five inches above the knee. However each golf course is guided by its own specific rules and guidelines in the matter. A womans shirt must also have a collar and once again a v-neck style sweater is allowed.

However, a woman can wear a shirt that is completely sleeveless or have short sleeved (providing it has a collar). Other accessories that are allowed are ankle-length socks and athletic or golf shoes. The rules regarding socks for men are the same for women - so nothing garish. Another important to remember is that any accompanying person to the golf course should also follow the same dress rules. You would be wise to check out the rules on dress before you go along to your first round by phoning them or looking for their rules on the club website.
